Frequently asked questions

How do I price baked goods to make a profit?
Add every real cost of the recipe (ingredients, packaging, your time, waste and a share of fixed costs), then add the profit margin you want on top. This calculator does exactly that and shows a suggested selling price.
What profit margin should a bakery use?
There's no single right number. It comes down to your own goals and what your market will bear. Sieve Studio and this calculator work mainly with percentage margins, so you set the profit you want and see the price straight away.
How do I work out an ingredient's cost from the package price?
Divide the price you paid for the pack by the pack size to get a cost per unit (per gram, millilitre or piece), then multiply by the amount your recipe uses. The calculator handles the unit conversion for you.
Should I include my own labour in the price?
Yes. Your time is a real cost even when you bake from home. Enter how long the recipe takes and your hourly rate so the price reflects the work involved.
Is this recipe pricing calculator really free? Do you store my data?
It's completely free and needs no sign-up. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere. Create a free Sieve Studio account if you want to save your recipes and reuse them.
